Book Club: My Side of the Mountain, part 8: Nature Journaling


  • Read My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George: I Learn to Season My Food, How a Door Came to Me and Frightful Learns her ABC's


  • These assignments should take several days to complete.






  • Sam kept a log with biological illustrations as well as what worked for him in his survival Make a journal to use on nature hikes. In this journal tell about what you see and draw them or paste in things that you collect.
  • There are several plants mentioned in the book. Make a list of all the plants mentioned, classify them by their genus and species and research why they might have been beneficial.
  • Sam ate whatever he could find in the forest What plants, nuts, berries and roots could you use as food if you were in your local woods? Research and write a paragraph as if Lisa is giving you this information.

    1. I'm trying to decide what a good size would be for a nature journal. Right now the kids just have some composition notebooks, and that seems to be mostly working, just bulky.

    2. I have big plans after Easter and nature journaling is one of them. I have never mastered the art of doing it regularly, which ultimately is where the success lies. Time will tell- maybe I'll manage it this time round!
