Geography Album: Mississippi, The Magnolia State

We studied Mississippi in our state study this week. From our coloring page we learned that Mississippi's state bird is the Mockingbird and the state flower is the Magnolia.
We enjoy Magnolias all year around.
They have the most lovely thick green leaves. It is one of very few evergreens that have leaves and not needles.

We had a sandwich called Mississippi Sin, but we really didn't care for it much.
Other possibilities for Mississippi dinners could be fried catfish, hush puppies and fried pickles
For dessert we had Mississippi Mud Pie.

And I can't leave a study of Mississippi without thinking of this song...

We have "visited" 44 states (88%) in our Postcard-Geography album.
We still need postcards for these states:
Mississippi
New Jersey
Vermont
and Wyoming.
If you live in any of these states and would like to help us with this project, please leave a comment on how I can get in touch with you. Thank you!

  3. Fried pickles sound strangely interesting. I don't think I've ever actually seen a magnolia in real life - they do look like they'd be very pretty though.

    1. You have never had fried pickles? I think it is interesting what things are regional. I always get in the mindset that everybody in the US has the same things we do! It is usually served with "Come Back" sauce or Thousand Island dressing.

  4. I just love your state studies. I love magnolias too. They are all over the place here. Just peeked at the sandwich recipe...looks pretty good, why didn't you like it?

And Mississippi Mud Pie...yummy! :) Ahhh The Doobie Brothers. :)

    1. It seemed more like a dip. It was very, very rich and made us a little sick to eat it on a sandwich. Unfortunately it ranked a thumbs-down by all of us!

  5. I love this idea of studying each state. There's so much you can do with it. This would be a great idea to do with conjunction of a vacation. Not that we have any planned soon. Thanks!
