Unexpected Nature Study at the Beach

It was just an average family afternoon at the beach for us.

The water is still a little cold yet, so we are not swimming in earnest.

Just enjoying being outside on a summer's day...

playing with the abundant seaweed...

and then we had an unexpected guest at our little beach party..,

a visit by a water snake!

I think it is a Northern Water Snake  (Nerodia sipedon), but I am not positive. We observed and talked about him as much as we could at the beach and sketched him from our memories, and looked him up in our field guides once we got home.

  2. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to go near the water again. Oh but aren't the unexpected visitors the best!

  3. I would love to live near the shore! What a pleasant time...minus the snake!

  4. Oh. Interesting. LOL I'm OK with fish nibbling my toes, but I'm not so sure about a LONG snake!

  6. Thanks for the glimpse into your beach time. Snakes are not a welcome guest at my beach time! I loved seeing your relaxing time outside. Thank you so much for sharing your entry with the OHC.
