Comparing Body Measurements

Using just a length of yarn or string, students measure and compare the length or circumference of various parts of their bodies. They also compare their own measurements with others. The results might surprise you! I was surprised at how many excited exclamations could be heard, such as, "Look, this is how long it is from head to by belly button!"

  1. I learned that everyone's foot is the size of the forearm from the wrist to the elbow. I didn't think so visually until I measured it and found out it's true! Fun to have it open ended!

  2. I'm always amazed at how big the measurement is around their heads! :)

  3. Sounds like a fun lesson - interesting for them to consider how maths can be applied directly to themselves.
P.S. I host a Play Academy linky on Fridays and wondered if you'd come over and share an idea with us? :)

  5. We did this too some time ago, and even had a "Chart of Anna" hanging on our wall for a while. She was fascinated that her belly is so big - go figure :)
