Eastern India

This week we learned about Eastern India.

We looked at what area Eastern India covered.
A ferry across the Ganges at Varanasi. -World Food Cafe
On the map, we found the Ganges River and then we looked at the photo of it in the World Food Cafe book.
The Bay of Bengal at Gopalpur-on-Sea.
We located the Bay of Bengal and looked at the picture of the women in their beautiful saris. We located and added
Calcutta to the map.

We made some dishes of Eastern India, but first I had to make some Tamarind Paste.

They only had the dried Tamarind pods at the store so I bought them and...
made my own Tamarind paste using this tutorial.

The Tamarind paste went into the Calcutta Eggplant. This dish has a sauce made from onion, garlic, chilies. When it was cooking, it was so pungent, I thought that it was going to be too spicy, but it really toned down in the cooking and I could taste the sweet-tart tones of the Tamarind.
The other dish we tried was Mixed Vegetable Masala, which tasted like a curry, but milder. Both dishes were good, but not on our favorites list.
