Squished Penny Virtual Trip and Geography Album: Hawaii, part 2: Oʻahu

Previous Post: Squished Penny Virtual Trip and Geography Album, Hawaii, part 1: Honolulu/Waikki
We haven't done a Squished Penny Virtual Trip in a while, so we decided to finish up our study of Hawaii by researching the places the squished pennies originated. As we learned about the places, we also found pictures of these places and printed them out. We added the squished pennies and that completed our page for the Geography Album.

We learned that Oʻahu, known as "The Gathering Place", is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is the most populous of the islands in the U.S. state of Hawaii, and is the home of Honolulu International Airport. The state capital, Honolulu, is on Oʻahu's southeast coast. This volcanic island is 44 miles long and 30 miles across. The island is the result of two separate shield volcanoes:Waiʻanae and Koʻolau, with a broad "valley" or saddle (the central Oʻahu Plain) between them.

Now you can join us for our make-believe virtual tour of Oʻahu.

Waimea Falls
source

This waterfall is located in Waimea Valley on Oahu’s North Shore. We saw hula and other cultural demonstrations, musical performances and cliff diving here.

Next we went saw lots of sea animals and watched native dancing. Then the dancers helped us weave our own headbands from banana leaves. Quentin and James tossed spears. Katie learned to hula. Then we all gathered around the Chief’s 'Imu as he unearthed our dinner and we feasted upon his all-you-can-eat Lu'au buffet with traditional Hawaiian dishes like mouthwatering Kalua pork, Lomi Lomi salmon, Mahi Mahi and poi.

Then we went to the Dole Plantation which is a theme park that includes a train, the  Pineapple Express, a Plantation Garden Tour, and a Pineapple Garden Maze.

Paradise Cove DancerParadise Cove
Then we went to Paradise Cove and got on their speed boats which zipped us to an encounter with wild dolphins, an incredible snorkel with sea turtles at “Turtle Town" and a snorkel tour among a reef teeming with tropical fish. As evening came on the speed boats zipped us back to take showers, don Hawaiian clothes and then they gave us a shell lei greeting. We saw several shows before we went back to the hotel for the night.
A unique perspective - visitors look down upon the USS Arizona
USS Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor
The next morning we went to the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. We took the tour, saw a documentary film and took a boat trip out to the USS Arizona Memorial.
After getting our squished pennies, we went to the airport for our 10-hour return trip.
How was that? Did you have fun?
