Postcard-Geography Album: South Dakota, "Mount Rushmore State"

This week's postcard comes from Marla in South Dakota.
She writes,
"I'd be glad to send one from South Dakota! I live in Custer, in the Black Hills."
"Greetings from Custer, SD, in the Black Hills! On the front, you'll see what SD is best known for, of course -Mt. Rushmore! It's pretty awesome to see. We also have hundreds of buffalo (bison). The upper left hand pic is of the Badlands. I think the lower left pic is of Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park. Good luck on your project."

James looks at the postcard and compares it to the coloring page he is working on.
"I'm tickled to help! I was homeschooled all the way through high school graduation AND I absolutely love geography projects like this."

"As far as food goes - buffalo's definitely something that's raised here (incidentally, this is a great buffalo recipe) and kuchen is the state dessert. Here are some recipes from the Rapid City Journal newspaper."

Chislica food that is apparently unheard of outside of South Dakota, is chunks of seasoned meat that has been deep fried. Fry bread (official state bread) has become a popular Native American treat. The honey bee is the official state insect of South Dakota so honey is a good choice as a topping. Blueberries, plums and chokecherries all grow wild in South Dakota. Milk is the official state beverage.

"This is a recipe created by Russian German immigrants. It is very popular in the Nebraska, South Dakota region where I am from. Cabbage and ground beef are encased in a neat little bread package."

"South Dakota is home to an endless supply of American history and Americana. Did you know the world's largest drug store calls Wall, South Dakota home? Or, did you know that the triceratops was one of the state's earliest settlers? What about the prairie the Ingalls family called home? Also in South Dakota!

These fascinating tidbits and many more are found in
M is for Mount Rushmore: A South Dakota Alphabet.
 "
After the Ingalls' left Walnut Grove, Minnesota in 1879, they settled in De Smet, Dakota Territory, where they lived until 1894 when Laura, Almanzo and Rose moved to Missouri.

We have "visited" 35 states with our postcard-geography album.
We still need postcards for these states:
Alaska, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont and Wyoming.
If you live in any of these states and would like to help us with this project, please leave a comment on how I can get in touch with you. Thank you!
