Snow

We have had lots of fun with snow as our nature study topic. We have looked at snow crystals, and looked at tracks in the snow. There was another activity with snow that I thought we should try as soon as it snowed. Last night the snow began to fall, so it was perfect timing for us to complete those activities.

First we collected some snow in a measuring cup and then we let it melt. I asked for predictions on how much water made up that cup of snow. The general consensus was that there was probably twice as much snow as there would be water once it melted. We were astonished, however, to find that there was a little less than 1/4 of a cup of water in the cup once the snow melted.

Then we took the water and filtered it through a coffee filter. Use a hand lens to examine the particles left in the filter. We only found a few grains of dirt particles. It was pretty clean snow! We will try these experiments when it snows again and see if the results vary any.
