Nature Study: Butterflies & Moths

If you keep your eyes open, you can find butterflies almost everywhere.
And in our nature walks, we often see moths and butterflies.

Some of our nature journal pages.

Even though sometimes they are hard to sketch, it is fun to try.

"From making crude and often meaningless pencil strokes, which is the entertainment of the young child, to the outlining of a leaf or some other simple and interesting natural object, is a normal step full of interest for the child because it is still self-expression.” -Anna Comstock, Handbook of Nature Study, pg. 17

Katie found a butterfly on the road on one of her biking expeditions.
She brought it home for us to draw in our nature journals.
We have examined the similarities and differences between moths and butterflies.

And we have shared with you our investigation of an unusual looking caterpillar...
and how he turns into a not so unusual looking moth.
