Food and Culture: The Americas: Brazil

This week we began our geography and culture studies of South America, beginning with Brazil. (Next week we will take a little detour to Ireland, but then we will get back to South America. We began a landforms project in conjunction with this.

We also tasted this Brazilian dish, Black Bean Stew with Mango Salsa. Black beans are cooked with sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, red bell pepper, tomatoes and spices. It is then topped with a salsa made from mangoes, carrots, celery, orange and chilies. It was delicious. We simplified the dish from the recipe in World Food Cafe by cooking the black beans in the crockpot and then, once they were cooked, adding the rest of the stew ingredients and cooking it all day. It was delicious.
