- Read from The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, page 116.. Make notes of key words as you read. Write a few sentences about what you have learned in your history notebook. Another option is to use the Medieval History Portfolio, Homeschool Journey.
- Read The Thousand and One Arabian Nights and The Shadow Spinner by Susan Fletcher.
- Color an appropriate map such as the one with History Odyssey, Pandia Press, Level 1 (1-4th grade), Level 2 (5th-8th grade).
- Include appropriate dates on your timeline.
The Abbasid dynasty were the leaders of Islam from 750 for the next 500 years. The leader was called the caliph.
This is the culture brought together the learning and arts for many areas, including Persia, Greece, Arabia and India.
It was in this climate that the stories from The Thousand and One Arabian Nights were created. The stories came from India, Syria and Egypt, but all feature characters such as Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor and Aladdin. Harun-al-Rashid makes an appearance as the ideal caliph.
Since the play we are doing this year, The Keeper of the Tales is based on some of the Arabian Nights tales, the boys were very familiar with their style.
We still read the most famous tales and we also read The Shadow Spinner, which tells all about the Shahrazad frame of the Arabian Nights story.
