Stone Soup

This story, about three hungry soldiers who outwit the greedy inhabitants of a village into providing them with a feast, is based on an old French tale.
My oldest remembers when she is little and we made stone soup, so she wants to make soup with her brothers, too.
She has them gather "three round, smooth stones" and wash them thoroughly.
These are added to a large pot of water.

"A good stone soup should have cabbage."
And so it is added.
One by one the vegetables and beef are added to the pot, just like the story.
"If only we had a little barley and a cup of milk! This soup would be fit for the king himself."

And so they are added...
and the pot is stirred.
"Such a soup! How good it smelled! Truly fir for a king."

"Would not such a soup require bread-and a roast-and cider? Soon a banquet was spread and everyone sat down to eat. Never had there been such a feast. Never has the peasants tasted such a soup. And, fancy, made from stones!"
